In Tennessee, we began by working with the TN Eagle Forum lobbyist who has 18 years experience in the TN State Legislature. She quickly found us two excellent and respected sponsors.  Then she had our group (5 of us) work the House and Senate Commerce Committees - where the legislation has been assigned.  We got 6 Representatives to co-sponsor, and 3 Senators. Having talked to over half the members of the Senate and probably 20 or so members of the House, we feel we have strong support going in to the process.

When the Legislator sponsors are ready, we'll have a Press Conference and begin contacting the TN media. We're always looking for creative ways to help get attention and build media support in the state media. The Press Release page has articles and other information to give you ideas and provide a template for your state's press releases, letters to editor, etc. And the Legislator Packet can be easily modified to become an awesome MEDIA KIT for your state editors and health reporters.

Sending information to the main newspapers in your state begins building the support that legislators like to see. One legislator from TN recently said: "If I get 5 or 6 calls on one issue, it becomes a priority."  The autism community is very strong and proactive. I know it's possible to generate 5 or 6 calls to key State Senators or Representatives who may turn a vote. 

This truly IS do-able. Everyday citizens are working every day at the grassroots level to remove mercury from vaccines, especially infant and pregnant mom vaccines.  The children of your state need you.  The legislation in your state won't start without at least one caring citizen who makes the first step.
